Active Release Techniques (ART®)

ART®, which stands for Active Release Techniques, is a system of care originally developed to treat soft tissues disorders in elite athletes and restore them to peak performance. Today, the technique is to treat a wide spectrum of problems such as headaches, back pain, shoulder pain, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee issues, and shin splints as well as a multitude of other conditions.

As a system of manual therapy, we use ART to diagnose and treat soft tissue adhesions that are a result of the development of scar tissue. By determining where the adhesions are located and skillfully manipulating the involved body part as well as directing a patient’s movements in that area, any fibrous adhesions causing the pain and dysfunction are separated and broken up. These techniques restore motion between the muscles and fascia to facilitate proper function. ART may be recommended for patients with acute, chronic, overuse, or repetitive stress injuries, or as part of a postoperative program of care.
